Have you ever wondered what would happen if there was a large asteroid heading toward Earth... and that asteroid actually hit Earth? Well, we may not have to imagine it. Because in April 2029 (and then again in April 2036), a large asteroid called Apophis (named after the ancient Egyptian god of darkness & chaos) will pass exceedingly close to Earth. And we hope it does pass. Apophis will come dangerously close to Earth. Common sense tells us that 18,000 miles is not a safe buffer zone when dealing with an asteroid flying at 26,000 MPH. A simple contact with a smaller piece of space debris can turn a guaranteed "near miss" into a direct hit. Additionally, Russian scientists are worried that (assuming Apophis does pass safely in 2029) Earth's gravity will alter Apophis's orbit so that it hits us when it comes back in April 2036. We owe it to ourselves to think about what would happen and how it could set off a domino effect that knocks humans back to the stone ages. Remember, awareness is preparedness.
