2015-2016 TMEA Tenor Trombone All-State Etude No. 2

2015-2016 TMEA Tenor Trombone All-State Etude No. 2

This is a gem! There are so many musical possibilities and phrasing choices. This should not be played in time but rather with a rich rubato like lyricism. Try to give predictable but intelligent direction to each phrase and look for opportunities to extend across bar lines. I find a few of the articulation marking to be over done. It seems odd to change so frequently back and forth from slur two tongue two and tenuto. Try to play what makes artistic sense but still gives integrity to the printed musical directions. Correction - measure 8 - last note should be a C# not a C natural. It was late and I left my glasses at home - sorry everyone. Brent Phillips is Associate Professor of Trombone at Baylor University.
