Chanakya was an ancient Indian teacher, philosopher, economist, jurist, and royal advisor. He is traditionally identified as Kauṭilya or Vishnugupta, who authored the ancient Indian political treatise, the Arthashastra, a text dated to roughly between the 2nd century BCE and the 3rd century CE. Chanakya (estimated 375 BCE - 283 BCE) was the chief minister of Chandragupta Maurya. He is also known by the name 'Kautilya'. He was a professor at the Takshashila University.[1] He destroyed the Nanda dynasty and made Chandragupta Maurya the king. His book Arthashastra is a great treatise on politics, economics, agriculture, social policy, etc. The Arthashastra is considered a mirror of Indian society during the Mauryan period. Chanakya's name appears in the Vishnu Purana, the Bhagavata, and Sanskrit texts like the Kathasaritsagara. His story is also frequently found in Buddhist texts. Buddhaghosa's commentary on the Vinayapitaka and Mahanama Thera's commentary on the Mahavamsa by Mahanama Thera contain accounts of Chanakya. Chanakya was a resident of Takshashila (a city near Rawalpindi). The events of his life are particularly connected to the accession of Maurya emperor Chandragupta. He was undoubtedly a renowned scholar of that time. It is said that Chanakya lived in a small hut, away from royal pomp and show. A 47-part serial based on Chanakya, written and directed by Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi, was also made, which originally aired on DD National from September 8, 1991, to August 9, 1992.
