Hood5six: Gulch (A Messy Farewell) 7/31/2022 Expo Park Los Angeles, CA (Sound & Fury 2022)

I did my best to shoot this despite the circumstances and those circumstances being in the shit for Terror followed by Gulch's final show in their home state of California. I was never a fan of Terror, preferring every other Vogel band (especially Buried Alive), but I gave them a shot as I did my best to find an ok spot to shoot Gulch from. Watching Terror followed by Gulch was the closest I might ever get to experiencing a fraction of what old timey medieval warfare was like minus the armor, the swords, and the shields. If you've ever watched any of the battle scenes in the Lord of the Rings franchise or the Battle for Winterfell in the final days of HBO's A Game of Thrones, you know what I mean. If I were under five feet and not built like a failed college football prospect, I could've died under the thousands of feet moshing to Terror (who undoubtedly kill it live). It let up after Terror ended but came back full force, if not a bit rougher, for Gulch. The entirety of Sound and Fury was brutal as far as constant moshing, stage diving, all the dust kicked up, and overall shenanigans, but like sex some of the greatest pleasures in life come with discomfort. I literally came out to Los Angeles for the one day of the fest before going back to NYC. I came away with an entirely sore and dirt covered body but also great memories and a sense of pride I experienced something historic to Hardcore. As Gulch were setting up I did my best to maintain the general position I held, because getting near that stage to film wasn't feasible. Getting slammed even worse then during the previous bands, my view obscured by the stage potatoes, and the risk of losing my only pair of specs was enough to not advance any further. Even though the LAPD shut off power to the fest during their last song, it was still a legendary experience, and possibly one of the most Punk ways to go out. Their performance was everything I expected and more with the overall ferocity of the entire fest in overdrive, as the community at large bid an aggressive farewell to one of the greatest success stories to come out of modern Hardcore. I think I said it best in my previous video of Gulch: "Perfect band with a perfect live show. An incredibly talented bunch of dudes who boast a powerful front man, amazing songwriting, top notch musicianship, and just a very unique sound, that's unmistakably their own." The gentlemen who made up the membership of this band are absolute class acts and you should support their future efforts if you're able. I wish I could've seen this band several more times but all good things must come to an end. Don't despair because it's over, but find comfort and joy in the fact that it happened. To all those who like Yamaha guitars, great jams, and a violent pit, I salute you. My fondest farewells and best wishes to Gulch, their loved ones, and the fans who made their meteoric rise to the top something to behold.
