A powerful earthquake has rocked the southern part of Japan, bringing down buildings and leaving at least three people dead and more than two-hundred injured. Search operations are ongoing for people who might be trapped under rubble. The six-point-five magnitude quake struck just before 9:30 p.m. on Thursday night, local time, at a depth of eleven kilometers near Kumamoto city on the island of Kyushu. Scores of aftershocks have been rattling the area, hampering rescue efforts. Authorities say around 20 homes crumbled during the earthquake and there are several reports of people being stuck under collapsed buildings. Thousands of homes remain without power this morning and gas supplies have been cut off to prevent further damage. Residents have been evacuated to safer surrounding areas. The authorities advise caution saying that aftershocks are expected to persist for about a week.
