To fully understand the passage today, we must first realize there are missing puzzle pieces. Sardis had a reputation, and everyone knew it. Sardis was known as a wealthy city - a city of the decadence. The people were notoriously loose-living, pleasure seeking, and luxury loving. It had a well-deserved reputation for apathy and immorality. It also had steep cliff walls that made it nearly impossible to penetrate the city. The citizens thought so. However, this would turn out to be their downfall. The problem in Sardis is there were people pretending to be Christians but were not. They were going through the motions, putting on a good show, checked off all the right boxes, and they looked alive… but they were really dead. Sardis had put their faith in the wrong things: wealth, comfort, shows. There were people playing church, but were not truly followers of Christ. They were called to believe with their heart, and confess with their mouth Jesus is Lord. Jesus is calling them to repent.
