Reinforced Concrete Design | Topic 10 Part 2: Design of RC Columns | Eurocode 2

Welcome to our Reinforced Concrete Design series to Eurocode 2. In this lecture, Topic 10 Part 2: Design of Reinforced Concrete Columns, we build on the previous lecture on combined bending and axial load and move into the practical design of RC columns. We explore column types, bracing conditions, effective height, slenderness, second-order effects, reinforcement requirements, and column failure modes. 📌 In this lecture, we: ✅ Define column behaviour under axial load and biaxial bending ✅ Distinguish between braced/unbraced and sway/non-sway structures ✅ Explain short vs. slender columns and introduce second-order (P–Δ) effects ✅ Evaluate effective height and end fixity using EC2, UK NA, and IStructE methods ⚙️ Show how bracing and joint stiffness influence effective length ✅ Apply EC2 rules for slenderness limits and identify when columns can be treated as short ✅ Classify column failure modes: crushing, combined bending, and buckling ✅ Explain how slenderness affects failure behaviour and moment magnification ✅ Introduce design bending moments including imperfections and second-order effects ✅ Summarise longitudinal and transverse reinforcement requirements  • Minimum/maximum steel ratios  • Bar diameters and spacing  • Link detailing, cranked bars, and continuity between floors 🏢 This series has been developed by Dr Leon Chernin and Dr Margi Vilnay. 👷‍♀️ Delivered by Dr Margi Vilnay – Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering, Chartered Engineer, and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. 🔎 Explore the full Reinforced Concrete Design series 📚 Watch the complete playlist: https://bit.ly/3JWCPGy 👉 Subscribe for more lectures like this! #ReinforcedConcrete #RCColumns #ColumnDesign #AxialLoad #BiaxialBending #Eurocode2 #SecondOrderEffects #Slenderness #EffectiveHeight #BracedStructures #ColumnReinforcement #StructuralEngineering #CivilEngineering #EngineeringLectures #EngineeringEducation
