Full completion of the Yoshi Challenge available post-game in Super Mario Advance. As permitted by speedrun.com, I used a file that already has all 40 eggs collected in order to skip the Yoshi cutscenes between levels that occur in the first playthrough. Unlike ace coins, which permanently save the instant you collect them and thus permit level warps and savewarping, in Yoshi Challenge you have to trigger “COURSE CLEAR!” in each level, or the Yoshi eggs don't count as collected, hence why all 20 levels are fully played through here. Also, you must not lose a life with eggs in your inventory mid-level, or you lose any eggs in the level you collected and have to find them again. As of the publication of this video, these are the rules for the All Yoshi Eggs category. Level-by-level comments: 1-1: Toad gains a speed boost while holding a POW or mushroom block, and his low jump is more than counteracted by his super strength and speed. Unfortunately, only those two projectiles give Toad the acceleration in the GBA port of this game, so he isn’t used as often in this run as other Mario 2 speedruns. 1-2: Mario’s jump height is the reason I used him here. Also I collect 5 cherries to summon a star to insta-kill Birdo at the end. 1-3: Mario’s jump height is again the advantage, and his faster falling speed helps too. 2-1: Peach is the best character for desert-themed levels, because of her float and digging speed. Again I grab 5 cherries for a one-hit KO on Birdo. 2-2: Peach’s maneuverability proves useful avoiding all the Cobrats and Pokeys, but the digging section here was messy because the star appeared on the wrong side and the Shy Guy pattern was bad, but I managed to get all 3 hits on Red Birdo with the Big Ninji, which has a slim chance of happening. 2-3: Peach’s float makes her the best character to score all 3 hits on Triclyde at once. 3-1: Toad’s speed boost and swift lifting speed give him the upper hand in this level. 3-2: Peach’s float enables a well-known shortcut to skip sections of the underground. 3-3: Toad can defeat Robirdo in 3 egg cycles, compared to 5 for the other characters, since he’s the only one quick enough to pick up both giant eggs. I also implement the key skip using the Ninji. 4-1: Luigi’s jump gives him the advantage. 4-2: Peach’s float makes the whale section much smoother. My only death in this run was very early in this level before I reached the first egg. 4-3: Peach’s faster falling speed than Luigi and common ability to skip the key is why I picked her for this stage. I collected the mushroom from Subspace on the way back down from the pink egg for a safety precaution, as many runs died in this section alone. Unlike my last run, I got my quick kill strategy for Fryguy to work! 5-1: Peach’s float and faster falling speed gives her the upper hand in this stage. 5-2: Mario’s jump and strength for the Birdo fight is why I used him in this stage. 5-3: Mario’s jump is probably most beneficial to this level. Only he and Luigi can power jump high enough to speed up the process of setting up the Subspace door to collect the pink egg. Pidgit tripped me towards the end though, and the Clawgrip battle wasn’t the smoothest either. 6-1: Peach’s last of eight appearances. Once again I despise the digging sections of this game. 6-2: Luigi’s far jump and slower gravity prove useful here. I also found a major timesave in this level compared to my old route, using the Beezo to reach the cyan egg much faster than normal. Also Giant Shy Guy expedites the Green Birdo battle. 6-3: Mario’s high gravity shortens the route to get to the pink egg, and he can jump high enough without squatting to reach Mouser’s platform. I deliberately stopped at the line before the fight to get the spark to be caught in the explosion, removing a threat to kill my speedrun. 7-1: Luigi is the only character who can power jump high enough to reach the four ladders without stacking mushroom blocks. I grab the POW block early on to prevent the Bob-omb from destroying the floor where the green egg is found. 7-2: Mario’s jump combined with better speed is why I use him in the grand finale. Was a bit slow in the mushroom block/spark section due to bad RNG but everything else went pretty smoothly. This run was very challenging and frustrating to make, but I am very happy with my achievement! Under 50 minutes!! Hopefully someone eventually challenges my time. By coincidence I performed this speedrun exactly a year after uploading my first speedrun: The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, glitchless, which can be viewed here: • (OLD) Four Swords Adventures glitchless sp...
