finntroll 1984 BISMARCK & TIRPITZ: NAZI MEGASHIPS (FINN'S WAR TALES #13 WW II CODWWII) In this video finntroll 1984 focuses on a part of Hitler's Z-Plan under command of Admiral Räder. The Z-Plan was the idea of winning the future war by dominating the seas with a highly accustomed German naval force. U-boats were going to be useful in a later stage of the war but battleships were necessary. Two gigantic battleships were to be built to keep the shores safe and German workers spent 4 to 4,5 years to finish them in the harbor of Hamburg, one of the only ports suited to house two immense building projects. Mid February 1939, the Bismarck had been christened and launched in the presence of Adolf Hitler. On April Fool's Day 1939, the Tirpitz was launched. The humongous Tirpitz had a length of 253 meters, a width of 36 meters and a height of 18 stories! But because Hitler already gave the order to invade Poland 5 months later, there was not enough time left for Admiral Räder to complete the H39, the H42 and the H44. These 3 ships, even bigger than the Tirpitz, were started but never completed. Their purpose was to shoot over longer distances than the British battleships and land cannons. It wasn't until February 25, 1941, that the Tirpitz was involved in a real combat situation, and ordered to move to the Norwegian city Kafjord to guard the Arctic Route between Great Britain and the Soviet Union. The Bismarck however, was destroyed during its first real mission under the command of Admiral Günther Lütjens. It attacked and sunk the legendary British HMS Hood on May 18, 1941, was counter-attacked by British aircraft on May 20 and ultimately sunk on May 27, 1941. It was an order from Räder to Lütjens to let it sink with its flag held high, rather than surrendering this ship to the allies. Hitler was so outraged that he immediately cancelled the H-series project of Admiral Räder and ordered to strip down the warfs, so he kept the Tirpitz as a gigantic unsinkable watchdog! Because of the brilliant design of the Tirpitz' bottom layer, it was divided into a large number of smaller compartments that could be opened up and closed down. In case of an enemy torpedo hit and a flooding compartment on one side of the ship, the crew would have the ability to open up the same compartments on the other side to establish perfect balance in all conditions. Most of the Tirpitz' fighting days would take place around Norway but ultimately also this unsinkable ship would find its demise in November of 1944. Admiral Räder had resigned as Z-Plan Commander at the very start of 1943, after the Tirpitz launched an attack without order on New Year's Eve of 1942. U-boats would continue to be the main weapon of naval combat, with Grossadmiral Karl Dönitz as Commander. The watchdog Tirpitz was nicknamed 'The Beast' by Winston Churchill. finntroll 1984:    / @finntroll1984cod
