HISTORY OF THE WORLD CUPS: CHAPTER 1: URUGUAY 1930

The 13th of July in 1930 was the kick-off of the first World Cup ever. The setting, which had been chosen two years earlier, was Uruguay. Even though there were European countries applying, Rimet, former president of the UEFA, voted for the South American option. In contrast to following editions that time there were no qualifying rounds. 13 national teams participated. Actually it should have been 14, but Egypt did not participate because FIFA did not consent to delay the start and they did not make it on time. It was not the only national team with problems though. France could only participate because Rimet made use of his influence. Romania participated with a mixed team consisting of workers of an oil company chosen by the King. The teams were divided into 4 groups, one of four participants, and three of three participants. A: Argetina, Chile, France, Mexico; B: Bolivia, Brazil, Yugoslavia; C: Peru, Romania, Uruguay; D: Belgium, United States, Paraguay. Oddly, the inaugurating match was not played by the hosting national team. It was France-Mexico, which the French won 4-1. Contrary to other World Cups only three stadiums were used to play because Montevideo had monopolized the settings: Gran Parque Central, Pocitos and the Estadio Centenario. The four best teams reached the qualifying phase: Argentina, United States, Uruguay and Yugoslavia. The finale was played by Uruguay and Argentina, with the hosts winning 4:2. This is how Uruguay became the first World Cup champion. It was a great success and two years later another championship was played. But this is another story...
