However, not everyone from their battalion made it home. Ten of their comrades lost their lives during the Kabul airport terrorist attack on August 26. Troops from the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines were on duty protecting the airport that day, as the US airlifted its citizens and some locals out of the country. The suicide bomb killed at least 13 US servicemen and women, as well as more than 180 Afghans.
