The paradigm of all spiritual traditions is that we are immortal souls in a temporary body. We live in a society where altered states of consciousness & visionary thinking are frowned upon, something that ancient civilizations revered. Our society looks down upon the use of psychedelics for the expansion of consciousness, yet accepts dangerous substances such as alcohol, sugar, tobacco, coffee & TV. The basic alert state of consciousness that is favourable for science & commerce, does precious little for society, and this model is broken.
