Chattanooga shooter Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez was an avid MMA fighter and “nice guy” - TomoNews

CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE — Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez, the man behind the shooting in Tennessee that left four marines dead, was an amateur MMA fighter and has been described as a “nice guy” by friends. Abdulazeez was not on a watchlist and other than a DUI, he had no criminal record. High school friends like Kagan Wagner remember him as “friendly, funny, kind.” While Ryan Smith, who was on the wrestling team with Abdulazeez, said he was a “swell guy” and “unbelievably nice.” Abdulazeez was born in Kuwait and came to the US in 1996 with his parents. Smith said he came from a “normal Chattanooga family” but was always a devout Muslim. While he has no known links to ISIS, in the last week he made two blog posts advocating strict adherence to Islam. Abdulazeez’s graduation page features a quote boasting that his name causes national security alerts. Though this light-hearted post-9/11 joke now seems a shadowy foretelling of this week’s tragic events.
