The fourth annual North Carolina Transportation Summit is taking place Wednesday and Thursday at the Raleigh Convention Center. The summit will be held at 500 S. Salisbury St. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday. About 1,000 members of the transportation industry are in Raleigh this week for the annual event. The transportation sector has to plan ahead, looking at technology we will see 20 to 30 years now. That requires thinking about new inventions, from drones and autonomous vehicles to building an entirely new infrastructure to charge electric vehicles. This year's focus is on growth, green technologies and clean energy vehicles. It’s part of the Cooper administration’s push to cut carbon emissions in North Carolina. In a keynote speech, Gov. Roy Cooper reiterated his commitment to get more heavy-duty trucks off the roads, because they contribute a disproportionate amount of air pollution. Manufacturers are already moving in that direction, but that transition can only happen if the state builds the electric charging infrastructure to support it. Cooper says the change could bring thousands of good jobs and make the state a hub for clean transportation technology. Attendees will hear from industry experts who will offer insight and guidance into the future of transportation and mobility. The 2023 NC Transportation Summit is being hosted by the NCDOT and NC Go! to bring together transportation officials and leaders in Raleigh. Gov. Cooper, Sen. Tom McInnis, Sen. Mike Woodard, as well as Rep. Brenden Jones and Rep. Phil Shepard, will be speaking at the event. One of the topics of discussion will highlight the ways in which the NCDOT plans on reducing carbon emissions. "As part of Executive Order 246, NCDOT is collaborating with stakeholders to create a plan for the rapid decarbonization of NC’s transportation sector," the agenda read. "This informational drop-in session will include updates on the plan and process." There will also be a trade show that features new cutting-edge technologies, a business development zone for transportation contractors to network and a career fair to learn more about opportunities to work at NCDOT and NCDMV.
