Kawhi Leonard traded to the Raptors for DeMar Derozan. Why would the Raptors trade for Kawhi Leonard from the Spurs? Was Kawhi Leonard in his feelings and now he’s gonna be with Drake? Kawhi Leonard has been traded to the Raptors for DeMar Derozan in a bizarre turn of events, but what does this mean and why would the Raptors want him? Kawhi Leonard got traded from the Spurs along with Danny Green to the Raptors for DeMar Derozan, Jakob Poeltl, and a first round pick in a weird trade which both all-stars wanted no part of. This trade kinda came out of nowhere after Kawhi Leonard has been demanding to go to LA. Since he is on a 1 year deal, Kawhi doesn’t have to stay with any team he signs and so non-LA teams have been hesitant with giving the Spurs a worthy package for Kawhi. Then here come the Raptors fresh off of being dominated by LeBron in the playoffs with a trade offering Derozan and now here we are.This works out perfectly for the Spurs because they give Popovich another star while he is still coaching and I don’t think they could have done any better in terms of giving Pop current talent. Masai Ujiri, the Raptors GM, must have not felt confident in the Raptors in the East even without LeBron and so they made a move. It doesn’t make sense to trade Derozan who was on a 2 year + player option deal for Kawhi who’s not only on a one year deal, but also has never stated he would like to play for Toronto. It doesn’t help his brand grow, it’s cold, it’s a different country. The Raptors aren’t that stupid to trade assets for Kawhi Leonard. Either they are super confident that they can resign or they have another plan and I’m banking on the fact that they have a second plan. Kawhi Leonard can fit with any team which makes him so appealing to every team and that’s why I’m not worrying if he goes to the Raptors, Lakers, Boston. He’ll work anywhere. If Kawhi walks out on the Raptors, then the Raptors will go into rebuilding mode without any pieces in return, but I feel like they are already in rebuilding mode. Now this may seem like a stretch, the acquisition of Kawhi Leonard means that the Raptors can use Kawhi as a trade piece and gage the interest of teams like the Lakers. While the Spurs did not want to trade Kawhi to a rival conference team, the Raptors will be more willing if it means they can get more young talent. For example, they could get Kuzma and 1 pick which is better than what the Spurs wanted which was Ingram, Kuz, and picks. The Raptors can’t be relying on a Paul George type of situation where the player will resign because there’s no incentive for Kawhi to stay with the Raptors other than maybe Drake. They could wait till the trade deadline to figure things out, but Kawhi’s trade value drops each day. I’m happy that this whole Kawhi Leonard BS is over because he was seriously acting like a diva, not playing, blaming the Spurs, asking for a trade. I feel like he could have handled it differently. I feel bad for DeMar Derozan who can be added to a list of player lied right before being traded. At least he gets to play with a great coach in Popovich.
