Chicago O'Hare Planespotting: RARE Etihad 777-300ER Visit
Whenever one of Etihad's Airbus A350-1000s goes in for maintenance, there is usually a decent chance that the airline's daily service to Chicago might see an occasional equipment swap to the Boeing 777-300ER given the similar capacities of both planes. Sure enough, A6-XWC went in for a quick check and after returning to service, A6-XWE has now gone for a quick maintenance check. As such, Etihad has scheduled the 777 back to Chicago for a select few days. This served as a massive throwback to pre-pandemic when Etihad would regularly fly the 777-300ER on its Chicago service. The pandemic saw Etihad suddenly replace the 777 with 787-9 service to ORD which eventually upgauged to A350-1000 service. I never properly got to catch Etihad's 777 so this was always a high bucket list catch, especially the old livery ones given that's my favorite 777-300ER livery. On June 13th, EY9 was operated by A6-ETJ, one of the old livery examples. Even better yet, my parents were on this flight. Unfortunately, tensions in the Middle East caused Iraqi airspace to shut down right as this flight was in that region. This caused them to turn around and make a decent detour, eventually needing to stopover in Dublin for refueling. The flight landed in Chicago over four hours late with some crummy weather but man am I glad to have finally got the catch I've been wanting for some time.
