It showed a villain that in the end, was right, and it showed that the series was capable of change without abandoning its roots. If Ubisoft were to learn any lesson from Far Cry 5 ‘s massive success, it would be to keep innovating. So why then did Far Cry New Dawn not get the same love and adoration? Well, according to many, it was the story, specifically the villains, the gameplay and how its RPG mechanics interfered with what many would consider the quintessential far cry experience, and of course, many didn’t like how short the game was. It makes sense it’s shorter, given it’s lower asking price and the fact that it followed a trend set by Blood Dragon and Primal which was to make a spin-off in the same map at the last numbered entry. Ubisoft, for all their shortcomings, make exceptional worlds, and they are good enough to not be delegated to one game. Blood Dragon and Primal sold well, and are heralded as being great against the test of time, so why wasn’t New Dawn given the same treatment? I want to spend this video exploring that; looking at where the game went wrong, and some of the ways it went right. Our arrival into Hope County starts similarly to the beginning of 5, being put in the role of captain, specifically, someone who is morally good. This was a trend I had hoped to not see return, but it appears as though the Far Cry series has moved away from being a lens through which we view virtual violence to being an Uncharted-esque take down the bad guy by any means, where self defence is implied in every violent interaction, and any unnecessary destruction is seen as the means for liberation. Not a big deal, but if we’re to charitably view the criticisms that this game strayed too far from the Far Cry identity, then it’s important to note that exhibit A is the very first thing we see. As we move through the introduction, we see a new level of accessibility to the series. A quick recap preludes our arrival, much like Far Cry 5, and we’re taught the basics of stealth, looting, and due to our inexperience and lack of weaponry, are shown early that the Highwaymen are a real threat. I liked that the game follows Far Cry 5’s steps by making us a secondary character in the opening. Thomas Rush is the protagonist, and we’re just his lackey, and he even sacrifices himself to aid our escape. As far as aesthetics and colour palettes go, the opening feels like a proper continuation of Far Cry 5’s nuclear ending, the ending in which this game builds upon. Fire, ruin, and a scorched environment bring to mind the fallout of Hope County, and makes the twins' excessive use of colour feel all the more imposing. Of course, this aesthetic is dropped rather fast once we meet up with Carmina, a woman whose birth we actually saw in Far Cry 5. Joseph Seed was at the heart of my previous Far Cry retrospective. Like the previous villains of Far Cry, like Vaas from Far Cry 3, and Pagan Min from Far Cry 4, my Joseph Seed analysis intends to draw from all the media, and that's pertinent to this Far Cry New Dawn video, the next part of my Far Cry series retrospective. Avoiding Far Cry 2 once again, I want to talk about the Far Cry New Dawn gameplay, the Far Cry New Dawn ending, Far Cry New Dawn ending explained, and ultimatley answering why do people hate Far Cry New Dawn? This Far Cry New Dawn retrospective will spoil most of the game, so look elswhere for a spoiler free Far Cry New Dawn review. I can't properly give you a Far Cry New Dawn analysis or analyse the impact of Far Cry New Dawn years later without spoiling everything in this Far Cry New Dawn critique.
