River Musamya in Buyikwe district is a source of water and fish for many locals, but it is slowly dying as a result of pollution caused by the affluents from the distillery plant owned by Scouls or Lugazi Sugar Factory. There various chemicals that are contained in the untreated bent-wash or effluents after manufacturing spirits that end up in the river that a source of water and fish for the locals. There are also allegations of air pollution which continues to daunt people in Lugazi especially those living near the factory. NTV Spoke to the Regional Director Africa Operations Suresh Sharma who dismissed the allegations saying that the factory has invested over 6 billion shillings to mitigate pollution.
