INQUEST: Press Freedom in the Philippines

The 2018 World Press Freedom Index placed the Philippines in the 133th spot among the countries whose journalists report stories without any threats and interruptions. This ranking is six points lower than what we had in 2017. “The line separating verbal violence from physical violence is dissolving. In the Philippines (down six at 133rd), President Rodrigo Duterte not only constantly insults reporters but has also warned them that they ‘are not exempted from assassination,'” the 2018 World Press Freedom index said. This episode of INQUEST covers the current situation of the Philippine press. Now You Know sat down with Raymund Villanueva of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) and Sarah Torres & Marlon Nombrado, co-founders of media literacy organization Out of the Box to discuss press freedom, disinformation and how the current administration treats media outfits and practitioners.
