Mental Health: fighting stigma and discrimination

Mental health is vital to our wellbeing. When you’re mentally and emotionally fit, everything seems easier: school, studying, relationships, work. Challenges come and you can tackle them with ease. But many of us struggle with mental health issues that make it hard to face the world. People with mental health issues can be treated like they don’t belong, or like they’re dangerous and need to be avoided. This can trigger feelings of shame, helplessness, loneliness and anger, and lead to a spiral of exclusion and withdrawal. If you know someone who is struggling, reach out. Let them know you’re there for them. Listen to them, understand them, accept them and respect them. And if you are struggling, there are people who can help. Speak to someone you trust, teachers, friends, family. Let’s speak up and support one another. Everyone can play their part in tackling stigma and discrimination.
