I was pretty bored today, and I decided, for no particular reason, to spend 15 or 20 minutes trying Torch God. It couldn't hurt, right? (Like I said, I was pretty bored). I had just found a seed with a weird cave right next to spawn that seemed very slightly better than the seed used in the WR at the time, and I gave it a try. I did get a 58 second time, but after 20 minutes, I couldn't get any closer to the 56 second WR held by Yuidesu. But then I remembered that I saved this seed, which I believe was found by Max Overpower, with a 2 second Enchanted Sword. You spawn already inside a cave, and if you press the key to go right, the key to use auto-select, the key to select torches, and hold down the left mouse button all at the same time, then quickly turn off smart cursor as soon as you were able to aim, and then place 100 torches down, you should get it immediately, right? Well, it's weirder than that. Despite what almost every Journey Mode Torch God run on Speedrun.com would like you to believe, the event actually is not supposed to start with less than 101 torches. In the game code, you're supposed to have more than 100 torches within an 80x80 block square centered on the player, but obviously that isn't the case. When I asked around, it turns out that the game scans for torches line by line, and when you change your vertical position, i.e. by jumping or falling, you can mess up its system, and make it count torches twice. In this run, I was able to spawn the event with only 91 torches, although I was on such autopilot that I didn't release the mouse button until I had placed 95, which is still the amount of torches that need to get extinguished in order to give the player the Torch God's Favor. My guess is that this event is as glitchy as it is, because it was a feature that was rushed into 1.4.0.5. It probably wasn't even conceived until a few days before its release, and it was almost certainly due to the community backlash on the negative torch luck mechanic. Because of this glitch, it's certainly possible to start the event with only 51 torches, as stated on the wiki, but this would likely require a fair amount of setup. I thought this run might've been unbeatable, but if someone gets an even more favorable version of the glitch, and manages to start the event before even 90 torches have been placed, it may be possible to get a faster time. But I'd still dare to call this run very close to unbeatable. Seed: 1.4.2.1953226898 Version: 1.4.0.5
