Your fireplace is throwing massive amounts of heat straight up the chimney — and in this video, I show you how I fixed that. In this build, I walk through my custom DIY fireplace heat exchanger made from 1½” black steel pipe, designed to capture wasted heat from a large 42” fireplace and push it back into the room using a simple inline fan. This setup helps burn less firewood, improves heat output, and makes a big difference in an uninsulated enclosed porch. I cover: -Why fireplaces waste so much heat -How this DIY heat exchanger is designed and laid out -Why I chose black steel pipe (and what NOT to use) -Cost comparison vs prefab heat exchangers -Airflow vs temperature tradeoffs -Fan sizing, noise, and performance testing -Real temperature readings before and after -What I’d change or improve next time This system never sits in the coal bed, avoids deformation issues common with under-fire exchangers, and was built for custom fit and efficiency. The entire build came in under $350, compared to $700–$1,200 prefab units. ⚠️ DISCLAIMER: This video is for entertainment and informational purposes only. Fireplaces, heat exchangers, and combustion systems can be dangerous. Do NOT copy this build without understanding local codes, safety requirements, and proper materials. Never use galvanized pipe or toxic materials.
