Though it's unclear how long Pyongyang will refrain from hostility... it hasn't conducted any missile tests since the new UN sanctions were imposed earlier this month. Cha Sang-mi zooms in on the Trump administration's take on the developments. U.S. President Donald Trump seemed cautiously optimistic regarding Washington-Pyongyang relations at a rally in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday. Trump said, (quote) "I respect the fact that I believe he is starting to respect us," of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, adding that "something positive can come about." The same day, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters at the State Department that he is "pleased" that there have been no recent provocative acts from North Korea. North Korea hasn't conducted any "missile launches or provocative acts" since the UN Security Council voted on stronger sanctions against the regime on August 5th. (English Reuters) "I am pleased to see that the regime in Pyongyang has certainly demonstrated some level of restraint that we have not seen in the past" Tillerson also hinted at a "pathway" to dialogue with North Korea some time soon. (English Reuters) "We hope that this is the beginning of this signal that we've been looking for - that they are ready to restrain their level of tensions, they're ready to restrain their provocative acts, and that perhaps we are seeing our pathway to sometime in the near future having some dialogue," Tillerson cautioned, however, that Washington cannot lower their guard until they see more from North Korea's side. These calmer remarks from the Trump administration come after tensions were heightened at the start of August with a war of words surrounding North Korean missile threats toward Guam.
