Car Won't Reverse But Goes Forward (Causes And Solutions)

Car Won't Reverse But Goes Forward (Causes And Solutions). In this video tutorial I will show you how to fix a car that won't reverse but goes forward. Here’s what causes it: Low Transmission fluid. Transmission fluid facilitates smooth shifting in both manual and automatic vehicles. If your car is low on transmission fluid, you will notice issues such as shifting difficulties, slipping, and overheating gears. The transmission fluid could also run low in case of a leak. Old or dirty transmission fluid. Over time, the transmission system can accumulate debris, affecting its performance. Dirty transmission fluid will hinder its lubrication duty and stop you from shifting to the reverse gear. An old transmission fluid is usually dark brown or black. Broken reverse gear teeth. This is common in manual cars rather than automatic ones. The reverse gear teeth break due to driver abuse or improper shifting by new learners. You will hear loud clunks or clicks when shifting the gear to reverse. Here are the solutions to try: Refill the transmission fluid. Follow these steps to refill the transmission fluid: • Open the hood and find the dipstick. • The transmission fluid level should be between the full and the add mark. • Add more transmission fluid if you are running low. • Use the fluid specified in the vehicle’s manual. • For a manual car, safely jack up to locate and remove the transmission fluid. • To jack up your car, park your car on a stable and level surface. • Engage the parking brake. • Place wheel chocks opposite to the wheels you want to jack. • Find the jack point. • Put the jack in position. • Adjust the jack as you raise it. • Lift your car to the height you want. • Place the jack stands to support the car’s weight as you check the transmission fluid. • Never get under a car with no jack stand support. • Lower the vehicle after completion. • Visit a mechanic if you cannot jack up the car safely. Visit a professional to fix leaks. Inspect the transmission fluid. Use a dipstick and a white cloth to check the fluid color and consistency. Visit a mechanic if the transmission fluid is dark or smells bad. Check the gear teeth. Visit a professional mechanic to disassemble and inspect the transmission system. The mechanic will replace the damaged teeth. Ensure the vehicle completely stops before shifting from the drive gear to the reverse gear.
