The evening begins in a spirit of quiet, prayerful anticipation. About 20 minutes before midnight, the church is plunged into total darkness, symbolizing the silence of the tomb. From this darkness, a single flame is brought forth from the Altar—the "Light that never sets"—and is shared from candle to candle until the entire church is filled with radiant light. Following the sharing of the light, we process to the doorway of the Nave for the proclamation of the Resurrection Gospel. It is here that the triumphant cry of "Christ is Risen!" first shatters the night, signaling the start of the Resurrection Matins and the festive Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom. This is the heart of the Orthodox faith, where the sorrow of the Cross is replaced by the unadulterated joy of the empty tomb.
