It is the successor to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and introduces open-world elements to the series for the first time. It was first revealed in a trailer for the Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, and officially unveiled in the Nintendo Direct on April 2, 2025. The game features races with up to 24 drivers (previously 12) and over 40 Nintendo characters – many with unlockable costumes. The race tracks are now freely navigable and interconnected, similar to Forza Horizon or The Crew 2. In the classic "Grand Prix," you only drive the first of the four tracks in a cup as usual over three laps, the rest via connecting tracks (sections), and only the final lap on the track itself. In addition to classic races, there's a Battle Royale-like mode, the Knockout Tour, in which four drivers are eliminated after each checkpoint, until four compete against each other in the final. New features include rails you can "glide" on and wall jumps, which are made possible by pre-charged jumps. This offers some new shortcuts, especially for skilled players. The familiar anti-gravity elements from MK8 have been removed. In "Free Ride," the entire world can be freely explored. During this time, players can complete missions such as "Drive through all rings within the time limit" or "Collect all blue coins within the time limit." These missions can be activated using approximately 400 "P Switches." There are also "Peach Medals" and "? Floor Tiles" hidden throughout the world.
