Liverpool (a) Date: 11.9.1999 Attendance: 44,929 Chelsea and Arsenal think they are our biggest rivals, but only one team holds that title: Liverpool! These huge games never fail to conjure up something special, and this game was packed with incident. Liverpools' Jamie Carragher was generous to the visitors with two own goals, one early on, giving United a platform to perform on. Andy Cole netted the second, and the unlucky Carragher knocked in the third. Liverpool showed their hattling spirit late on, but this was always going to be an away win for the real Reds. Wimbledon (H) DATE: 18.9.99 Attendance: 55,189 On paper this looked like a home win for the treble-winning Champions, but the crazy "Dons didn't see it that way. United were in danger of losing their record of 27 games unbeaten, courtesy of an early goal from the Palestinian striker Walid Badir. Jordi Cruyff, a player who so nearly left Old Trafford, came on for the injured Giggs, and 18 minutes from time skillfully grabbed a point for the Reds. It was one of those days when chances were created and easily missed, and not every United player fired on all cylinders. Plucky Wimbledon, lucky United! Southampton (H) DATE: 25.9.99 Attendance: 55,249 United extended their unbeaten record to 29 games with a goal-fest against Southampton. The Reds were cruising to win 2-1 after first half goals from Teddy Sheringham and Dwight Yorke when keeper Tibi allowed a soft Le Tissier shot squirm past, giving the visitors a lucky second half equaliser. United seemed to wrap it up after a second from Yorke, but Southampton's never-say-die spirit won them a point, when Le Tiss' made it 3-3. United scoring three at OT usually means a victory. Not today!
