Champion Horse Training Tip #15: Rusty Green "Do you have your horse's head?"

"Make sure you have your horse's head AND you have it willingly." This is so important to so many areas to have success with your horse outside and inside the show pen and to most importantly to stay safe! transcript "Rusty: The thing that you need to realize is that when you are starting from the starting point where Cleve started, and you are going up to the point to where me and Shane are, is to remember the biggest point...no matter how long it takes you, YOU GET THE HORSE'S HEAD...YOU GOT THE HORSE. Cleve: That's your steering wheel. Rusty: That's everything you are going to start off with right there. You'll notice that, we are getting a lot of this, not wanting to get off the subject here, because we are trying to help, but, just remember when you get to a point you start having a problem with a horse, think about what you got. Do you have that horse's head? And what I mean do you have it, I mean is it a willingness? Or are you fighting to have it? Because if it's a fight and it's something that you are having to fight to get. You need to back up and go back, you need to back way up. Until it becomes something that is comfortable or I'm gonna tell you, I'm gonna guarantee you sooner or later it's going to bite you right in the butt. We see it every day, we go to the horse show and somebody puts their leg on a horse and the first thing they do the horse puts their head up and goes backwards. That's going to develop into the biggest danger spot there ever was. Shane: That's not funny, that's not good. Cleve: Yeah. Shane: That's happened to me a time or two. That's not good. Rusty: If you are watching, if you go show a lot of horses with us, we are starting to see it more and more and more. It's a simple fact that we've all learned, that you have to have that horse's face and you have to have it WILLINGLY. Cleve: You know we don't like to call it headset or anything but it's a fact, that the harder a horse feels in his jaw. The higher his head gets the less safe anybody feels. I don't care if it's your first time to get on a horse or it's one of us. Shane: Right.
