Some of the most "adult" romance novels on the market are being packaged with incredibly cute, fluffy, cartoon-style covers that look like light rom-coms or young adult books. After my last video on misleading book covers, I started asking questions. I spoke with people on both the traditional publishing side and the indie publishing world to understand why this trend exists. The answer isn’t simple. Marketing strategies, social media aesthetics, the influence of Tumblr-era illustration styles, and the reality of modern bookstore browsing habits all play a role in why so many spicy romance novels look so harmless on the outside. But this also creates a real issue. Many readers aren’t on BookTok or Goodreads. They aren’t checking spice ratings before picking up a book.
