At a news conference on Parliament Hill, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau provides an update on the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic. He is joined by federal ministers Carla Qualtrough (employment, workforce development and disability inclusion) and Dominic LeBlanc (intergovernmental affairs), as well as Dr. Theresa Tam (Canada’s chief public health officer) and Dr. Howard Njoo (the deputy chief public health officer). In his remarks, the prime minister announces a $1.5-billion investment in the federal government’s Workforce Development Agreements with the provinces and territories; the funding is aimed at assisting workers from underrepresented groups as well as those in industries that have been hard hit by the pandemic. He also discusses his latest conversation with provincial and territorial premiers and responds to questions about the provinces’ implementation of measures to slow the spread of COVID-19.
