Good Friday Tenebrae Service 7PM
Friday, March 29, 2024. 7PM Invite friends to join us in person & online at 7pm. falmouth.church The service tonight is a Service of Tenebrae, a tradition which goes back at least to the 8th century. The literal translation of the Latin word, tenebrae, is “shadows” or “darkness”, and this service is presented as a ceremony that progresses from light to darkness. We will begin our time this evening by participating in communion as a remembrance of the last supper. This event was used by Jesus to foreshadow His death upon the cross, through which He paid for our sins. We will then call to mind the seven last words of Christ. As each of these last words of Christ are read, a candle will be extinguished symbolizing the growing darkness and agonizing suffering that Jesus experienced on the cross for us. The tone of the service is somber, and the darkness increases until only one candle is left burning. Then, as we recall Jesus’ dying words, all lights will be extinguished and we will be allowed to meditate upon the tragic drama of Golgotha and the sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf. But then, one candle will be relit in the hope of the resurrection, and we leave, not as defeated people, but as expectant believers. This evening will be marked by a contemplative style, with a number of periods of natural silence. These times should be used for quiet reflection upon the sacrifice of Christ.
