Restaurant Cats Jazz Quintet | The Fish Collectors (Original Film Score)

The Fish Collectors is an animated short by Hailey Hameetman (@mintdoves) about two fish collectors who strike a deal for the infamous Candiru - a fish notorious for swimming up urine streams & into urethras. When the deal falls apart, a tense showdown ensues. Shoutout @mintdoves for such a fun story to score! Quintet tracks mixed by: Me About the Score For this film, I wanted to explore different styles that incorporated the big band. We have restaurant jazz in the beginning & end credits as well as a Cowboy Bebop/Incredibles-inspired fight sequence, but some other parts depart from jazz. In the beginning, when the prehistoric history of the Candiru fish is told, I have the trumpets play muted & the saxes playing trills over a floor tom groove, which gives it a rougher & primitive feel. In the finale section, I recontexualize these instruments in a Wild West style by having the trumpets heroically played in a mariachi way & having the double bass played with the bow instead of plucked like in jazz.
