Uncontrolled sugar with gestational diabetes can lead to fetal complications or maternal complications. The fetus due to its big size can have injuries at the time of delivery. There is an increased risk of pre-term delivery, there is increased risk of low levels of sugar and minerals at the time of delivery. Also chances of jaundice increase in these babies. Later in life these babies have a chance of obesity and developing diabetes. For the mother on the other hand, there is an increased risk of caesarian section, increased chances of miscarriage or preterm birth or she may develop high blood pressure during pregnancy. Again later in life this mother can develop Type 2 diabetes.
