The CUPRA performance brand struck out on its own with the Formentor, a lively Spanish take on the mid-sized performance SUV concept. This Coupe-Crossover will be a rare sight on our roads - and even rarer in this PHEV e-Hybrid plug-in form, but it deserves serious consideration from anyone prioritising efficiency and wanting something just a little different in this segment. CUPRA has recently started production of the new Formentor e-HYBRID, ahead of its arrival. CUPRA, which is introducing two variants of the plug-in hybrid Formentor SUV coupe. Order books are now open for the high-powered e-HYBRID 245PS, starting from £38,625 OTR RRP, while the 204PS version will be available to order in the coming weeks. 2021 sees CUPRA add Formentor to its plug-in hybrid line-up, alongside CUPRA Leon e-HYBRID, which will be joined later in the year by el-Born, the brand’s first all-electric model. A new hybrid engine is now available for the Cupra Formentor, which lowers the starting price of the plug-in version of the performance-oriented SUV. This new ‘e-Hybrid’ engine uses a 1.4-litre petrol engine linked up to an electric motor for a total power output of 204hp. This is sent to the front wheels through a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox. The range is growing with new cheaper models, extra powertrains from entry-level, 148bhp V1 to the plug-in E-Hybrid models capable of driving up to 37 miles on electric power and a rabid all-petrol 306bhp range-topper. Formentor's conventional powertrain options incorporate the Volkswagen Group's latest mild hybrid technology. For any kind of engine electrification at all in this CUPRA, you've to stretch to an e-Hybrid variant which offers plug-in hybrid tech, only available with front wheel drive. As with the CUPRA Leon e-Hybrid, what you get here is a tried and tested VW Group PHEV package, though in the Formentor, it comes in a de-tuned 204PS guise as well as in Golf GTE-style 245PS form. Either way, a 150PS 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine is mated to a 6-speed DSG auto gearbox and an 85kW electric motor powered by a 13kWh lithium-ion battery with a WLTP-rated all-electric driving range quoted at 34 miles.
