Created by: Ella and Zsozso Finding Richard My Honors English II students read Shakespeare’s Richard III and watched clips of Al Pacino’s docu-play Looking for Richard. Inspired by that film, students formed groups of 2-4 students and I challenged each group to create a mash-up scene from the play. Using only the original text, they had to “mash” together any combination of excerpts from the play. They could follow a character, a theme, a motif or recurring image, or a poetic device and mash them together as a way to focus in on that element. I told them to film their scene, but also to film their process. Much like Looking for Richard, I asked them to film themselves as actors discussing and analyzing their mash-up scene. They could interview each other, they could have a round table discussion, or they could document the creation process. They then used Windows Media Player to create a final film that included both their mash-up scene and the documentation of the “behind the scenes” action.
