Tennys Sandgren takes down Dominic Thiem at Australian Open to reach quarterfinals In one of the biggest upsets of the 2018 Australian Open, American Tennys Sandgren toppled fifth seed Dominic Thiem in a five-set thriller to reach his first Grand Slam quarterfinals. The lone American man left in the tournament gutted out the victory, trading sets back and forth with Thiem in a match that lasted just shy of four hours. The difference came in break points, where Sandgren crushed Thiem, outpacing him 50 to 17. Ranked 97th in the world, Sandgren had never won a Grand Slam match before this year's Australian Open, and has now marched past two top 10 seeds in Thiem and Stanislas Wawrinka, who he dispatched in the second round. Sandgren is also the second player in the past 20 years to advance to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in his debut at the tournament. He has defeated fourth seed Alexander Zverev and 12-time Grand Slam title winner Novak Djokovic in consecutive rounds.
