A drone video from a submarine bunker in Bremen, Germany Some history: A gargantuan U-boat bunker from WWII, which is the largest such structure in Germany and the second-largest bunker in Europe. Construction began in 1943, using thousands of forced labourers, as was the typical Nazi fashion of those days as Germany was already losing the war but crazily oversized projects were started in an attempt to avert the inevitable course of history. It was intended for the production of Type XXI submarines, but it could not be completed. Since the end of the war it has been one of the most massive WWII relics anywhere – and the only one of its kind in Germany. Plans to blow it up or conceal it under an artificial hill were abandoned (especially in view of the enormous costs this would have incurred). Parts of the complex had been used by the military after the war for storage, but this great grey brute has always also attracted people interested in this unusual structure as such. The site was on occasions also used as a highly unusual backdrop for theatre productions. Since the 1980s, attention has also been increasingly given to the aspect of Nazi crimes such as forced labour (there was a dedicated camp at the site – administratively a satellite camp of Hamburg's Neuengamme concentration camp). But only now is a proper memorial museum being developed. The military vacated the site in 2010, the planned memorial is scheduled to open in 2015. The massive site, named "U-Boat Bunker Valentin", lies on the bank of the Weser river north of Bremen, about 40 kilometres from the North Sea coast. The bunker is 33 metres high and spans an area the size of six football pitches. Its roof, intended to withstand Allied bombing raids, is up to seven metres thick. The facility was built in just 20 months by more than 10,000 labourers drafted from all over Europe. The names of 1,200 who died from overwork, malnutrition, sickness and arbitrary killings are known. The true death toll is believed to be far higher.
