Red and Blue, featuring improved sprites, were released in Germany in 1999 for the Game Boy. This was followed by the first special edition, Pokémon Yellow, which, in addition to the first 151 Pokémon, included elements from the anime. After its enormous success, Pokémon Gold and Silver were released for the Game Boy Color later that same year. This time, the setting was the Johto region, although it was also possible to explore a simplified version of Kanto. The number of known Pokémon increased with each generation. After the special edition Pokémon Crystal, the third generation launched in 2002 with the editions Sapphire, Ruby, and Emerald in the Hoenn region on the Game Boy Advance. In between, the Kanto remakes Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen (2004) were released, before the series continued in the Sinnoh region with Diamond, Pearl & Platinum on the Nintendo DS in 2006. The 6th generation, set in Kalos, was released worldwide on October 12, 2013, for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, as were the Hoenn remakes Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire in 2014. The 7th generation was introduced in 2016 with Pokémon Sun & Moon in the tropical Alola region, followed in November 2017 by two alternate-story versions, Pokémon Ultra Sun & Pokémon Ultra Moon. The series then transitioned to the hybrid console Nintendo Switch in 2018. As a first step, the decision was made to introduce a new main series with "Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!" and "Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!", strongly aimed at nostalgic players, newcomers, and Pokémon Go players. Players revisit the Kanto region and enjoy the first adventure in HD. Finally, on November 15, 2019, "Pokémon: Sword!" and "Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!" ushered in the eighth generation of Pokémon, in which players can explore the Galar region, inspired by Great Britain. The seemingly unnecessary Gigantamax feature and the fact that not all Pokémon from previous decades would be included in the game caused an uproar among players worldwide. For the first time, this is an open world with no fixed objectives! It's entirely up to the player when and how they complete "The Champion's Path," which focuses on Gyms and the Pokémon League; "The Legendary Path," where powerful, giant Totem Pokémon must be defeated to find valuable Mystery Spices; and "The Starry Road," where Team Star guides wayward students back to the right path at the academy.
