Gaza/Israel - Cabinet meeting/Hamas demonstrations

(20 May 1998) T/I: 10:28:56 Palestinian students burned pictures of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli flags during a campaign for student elections in Gaza City on Wednesday (20/05). Several dozen students participated in the demonstration held to launch campaigning in first-ever student elections at a school for training teachers, the witnesses said. Masked students from Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction of the PLO burned photos of Netanyahu, while students from the Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS) burned Israeli and American flags. Meanwhile the Israeli cabinet held it's weekly meeting at the Prime Minister's office in Jerusalem. Netanyahu briefed ministers on the latest developments in talks with the Americans and the Palestinians on a possible Israeli redeployment in the West Bank.
