The Supreme Court has held that coal blocks have been allocated by the government without rhyme nor reason and without following any kind of objective guidelines. Holding that coal block allocations from 1992 were illegal, the Supreme Court said that the cancellation of licenses will happen after hearings, but that the licenses of those companies that are clearly flouting environmental clearance rules should be canceled irrespective of how much investment the company has made in the coal block development. But this can spell havoc for the Indian economy. So it all depends on what does the SC do for the illegalities, if the allocations are canceled will it spell disaster or are there other outcomes which could be less painful?
