Before Bushwick became synonymous with street art, warehouses, and creative culture, it was shaped by centuries of migration, labour, and everyday life. In this video, I explore Bushwick’s history from its beginnings as Dutch farming land, through waves of industrialisation, and into the Italian and Latino communities that defined the area throughout the 20th century. These layers of settlement shaped the neighbourhood’s housing, streets, and social fabric long before artists and gentrification entered the picture. This is Part 1 of a wider series.. setting the groundwork for understanding how Bushwick became what it is today. In Part 2, I’ll look at artists, regeneration, gentrification, and the tensions between cultural production and displacement. Understanding Bushwick’s past is essential to reading its present and questioning its future. #Bushwick #BushwickBrooklyn #BrooklynHistory #NYCHistory #UrbanHistory #ArchitectureHistory #NeighbourhoodHistory #ImmigrantHistory #DutchSettlement #ItalianAmericanHistory #LatinoHistory #UrbanDevelopment #HousingHistory #IndustrialBrooklyn #ArchitectureYouTube #ArchitectureReels #BuiltEnvironment #CityStories #UrbanStudies #GentrificationContext #NewYorkArchitecture #SocialHistory #PlaceAndMemory #ArchitectureStudents #UrbanCulture #CityLayers #EverydayArchitecture #StreetHistory #ArchitectureStorytelling #architecturestudent #architecturaldesign #architecturelovers #urbandesign #archilovers #architecture #architecturalhistory #brutalism #architectureschool #arquitectura
