Can Employers Require Remote Workers Return to Office?
"I've been working from home, but my boss wants me to come back to the office.." If an employer wants you back in the workplace and you refuse - the short answer is YES you can be fired for that --- with ONE exception. You may have been working remote from home or elsewhere for a long period of time - but if your employer wants to change that status and require in-office work, you have little recourse. Here's the exception. If you have a disability or a medical condition that requires accommodation like an auto-immune disease or something similar you may be entitled to an accommodation. Those are special cases however, so it's good to be crystal clear on the general rule that an employer CAN require you to return to the office no matter how accustomed you have become to working from home. If you refuse to do so, they can legally terminate your employment. So keep that in mind if you are getting called back into the workplace and want to keep your job. Know your rights.
