Max Verstappen did the role of insider favorite more than justice in the Austrian GP and took his first win of the season for Red Bull Racing after going on a terrific charge. For quite a spell, though, it didn’t look like he would have a successful race. Cheered on by tens of thousands of Dutch fans in the Red Bull Ring’s stands, Verstappen made a mess of the start and dropped back down the field quite a number of positions. Subsequently, however, Red Bull’s driver set a ferocious pace, overtaking a whole string of rival competitors. In the final stages of the race, Charles Leclerc, who was still in the lead at the time, had to admit defeat following a harsh maneuver in Turn 3 and Verstappen’s way to victory was clear. “It was an incredible race and I’m so happy to take the team’s second victory at our home grand prix,” said Verstappen. “We passed Charles with a few laps to go, so I’m extremely happy. The move was close racing, and if you can’t make moves like that, I think it is better to stay at home.” To round off a perfect Sunday, Verstappen also took his first DHL Fastest Lap of the season.
