Heinrich Mann describes the biography of Diederich Heßling, a bourgeois son who, through the abuse of his father and teacher, becomes a fervent supporter of the authoritarian ideology of obedience of the German Empire. Ruthlessly and unscrupulously, he exploits the weaker, tolerates the abuse of the stronger, and thus promotes both his personal economic success and the imperial cult, which significantly weakens the democratic tradition. When THE SUBJECT begins publication as a serial in 1914, history overtakes fiction: the nationalism and militarism portrayed in the book culminates in the First World War. When the novel is finally published in its entirety in 1918, it is highly successful; however, Mann's brilliant analysis cannot prevent history from once again leading to a nationalist catastrophe.
