I got fascinated by the idea of reformulation and why it happens. Have you ever watched a YouTube video on a perfume, been ready to go buy it and then heard the stomach churning, heart sinking words, “of course, it’s been reformulated now.”. So, so many times I’ve heard this, and I’ve even said it myself! One fragrance I’ve always wanted to try is Lolita Lempicka’s Mon Premier Parfum, but that has so many different formulations and versions and names that it just makes my head spin. It’s too much to negotiate! I’ve given up… Here I’ve tried to explain the reasons why perfumes are reformulated. I’ve also tried to discuss whether you should be concerned about reformulations, but what do you think? Did you ever try a perfume that you’ve known and loved for years and found it was just DIFFERENT? How did you feel? What did you do? Did you regret buying or not buying backups? From what I’ve learnt whilst researching this, I think reformulation is happening more and more these days and probably much more than we all realise… I’ve tried to verify what I am saying in the video as much as possible and not to be sensationalist. I've cross referenced research into IFRA regulations, the actual ingredients of perfumes and the dates of acquisitions and takeovers. BUT honestly, reformulations and discontinuations happen without a fanfare, so they are sometimes difficult to date. Also the reasons for reformulations are often shrouded in secrecy (again, there’s no fanfare usually, unless you are Dior…) so please bear in mind that this video may contain some unintended inaccuracies, but none as far as I know. Also, cost breakdowns for perfume production and marketing will differ depending upon the type of fragrance being marketed, i.e. designer, niche or indie.
