Massive Explosion Hits North China's Port City Tianjin, Kills at Least 17

The death toll from a Tianjin warehouse blast Wednesday night has climbed to 17, according to rescuers. More than 400 people were injured, among them 32 were critically injured. About 100 fire trucks had been sent to the scene. The warehouse storing dangerous chemicals caught fire at 22:50 on Wednesday in the Binhai New Area of the city. The blasts happened at around 23:30, prompting fireballs to erupt from the warehouse. President Xi Jinping demanded that authorities quickly extinguish the fire caused by the blasts and "make full effort to rescue and treat the injured and ensure the safety of people and their property". Premier Li Keqiang has urged all-out efforts to save the injured and minimize casualties in the blast. Tianjin is home to around 15 million people, making it one of the biggest cities in China.
