56 years ago, the CIA sponsored the Coup that ousted Dr. Kwame Nkrumah from office. This came to light after the release of US declassified documents in 1999. On the ground, senior personnel of the Ghana Army carried out the coup as the US intelligence agency pulled the strings and called the shots under the radar. Dr Nkrumah had left the coasts of Ghana three days earlier to Hanoi, the Democratic Republic of North Vietnam, at the invitation of President Ho Chi Minh to interfere in the Vietnam War. A three-person Presidential Commission was left in charge of Ghana while Dr. Nkrumah's retinue of over 50 men ultimately turned on him. Although the news of the coup was made on official radio, Dr. Nkrumah heard it directly from Premier Chou En-lai of the People's Republic of China while he was visiting Peking.
