Holy God, We Praise Thy Name is an ecumenical anthem. The German Catholic priest Ignaz Franz wrote the lyrics in 1771 as a paraphrase of the Te Deum, Latin Christian hymn of the 4th century, the melody was composed by Heinrich Bone in 1852. This one soon became an important anthem song of the end of the main Christian ceremonies, and one of the most popular hymns in the German-speaking community. With German emigration of the 19th century, Holy God We Praise Thy Name became famous in the United States of America and was translated into English by Clarence a. Walworth in 1858.
