One of the biggest threats to diesel fuel is the growth of bacteria (I call fungus...). The moisture buildup in the fuel tank is a great growing environment for the stuff which will ruin the fuel and if you suck it into your engine can cause you a lot of problems. Fortunately there are treatments for this, as well as for winter gelling and cetane boosting for diesel fuel.
