Thailand's 'Jack the Ripper' arrested over murder after he was mistakenly released from jail

A serial killer known as Thailand's Jack the Ripper has been arrested on suspicion of murder, seven months after he was released early from prison. Somkid Poompuang was arrested on a train after a nationwide manhunt, which started on Sunday when he was identified as a suspect in the killing of a hotel maid. Somkid was dubbed the Jack the Ripper of Thailand in 2005 after being convicted of killing five women who worked as nightclub entertainers and masseuses, either by strangling or drowning them. He had been released in May this year. Prison officials now say his release was based on a misguided policy regarding well-behaved convicts. He is suspected of killing Rasamee Mulichand, who is thought to have been living with him as her boyfriend having met him online.
